Blood Group Guide

O Positive (O+) Blood Group

O+ is group O with RhD-positive status. Under standard ABO red-cell rules, group O recipients receive O red cells. O+ red cells can be used for RhD-positive recipients of compatible ABO groups.

Medical information notice: This article explains general blood-group concepts. Actual transfusion decisions are made by qualified clinical and transfusion-service staff after appropriate testing.

What does O Positive (O+) mean?

O+ is group O with RhD-positive status. Under standard ABO red-cell rules, group O recipients receive O red cells. O+ red cells can be used for RhD-positive recipients of compatible ABO groups.

Red-cell compatibility

O+ red cells can be given to O+, A+, B+ and AB+ recipients under standard ABO/Rh red-cell compatibility. The hospital still performs compatibility testing and selects blood for the patient.

Why compatibility testing still matters

The term “universal donor” is sometimes used for O-negative red cells in emergency contexts, but compatibility decisions should be made by the clinical transfusion service rather than assumed from a blood-group label.
