Blood Group Guide

AB Positive (AB+) Blood Group

AB+ is group AB with RhD-positive status. For red-cell transfusion, group AB recipients can receive compatible red cells from A, B, AB or O groups under standard ABO rules, with RhD compatibility considered.

Medical information notice: This article explains general blood-group concepts. Actual transfusion decisions are made by qualified clinical and transfusion-service staff after appropriate testing.

What does AB Positive (AB+) mean?

AB+ is group AB with RhD-positive status. For red-cell transfusion, group AB recipients can receive compatible red cells from A, B, AB or O groups under standard ABO rules, with RhD compatibility considered.

Red-cell compatibility

AB+ red cells are compatible with AB+ recipients under standard ABO/Rh red-cell rules. AB plasma has different compatibility rules, so red-cell and plasma compatibility should not be mixed together.

Why compatibility testing still matters

Blood components follow different compatibility patterns. WHO specifically distinguishes red-cell compatibility from plasma compatibility.
