Blood Group Guide

AB Negative (AB−) Blood Group

AB− is group AB with RhD-negative status. Under standard ABO red-cell rules, AB recipients can receive A, B, AB or O red cells, while RhD-negative status is also considered.

Medical information notice: This article explains general blood-group concepts. Actual transfusion decisions are made by qualified clinical and transfusion-service staff after appropriate testing.

What does AB Negative (AB−) mean?

AB− is group AB with RhD-negative status. Under standard ABO red-cell rules, AB recipients can receive A, B, AB or O red cells, while RhD-negative status is also considered.

Red-cell compatibility

AB− red cells can be used for AB− and AB+ recipients under standard ABO/Rh red-cell compatibility. The transfusion service confirms compatibility before transfusion.

Why compatibility testing still matters

ABO and RhD are important basic blood-group systems, but there are many other blood-group antigens. More detailed matching may be used for some patients.
