Who Can Donate Blood?
Blood donation is intended for people who are healthy and meet the donor-selection requirements used by the blood service. Eligibility is not determined by DonorNearby.
Medical information notice: This article provides general educational information and does not determine whether you are medically eligible to donate blood. Final donor eligibility is assessed by the blood centre or qualified medical staff.
General eligibility
Government of India's e-RaktKosh states that healthy donors are generally between 18 and 65 years old, weigh at least 45 kg and are healthy in general. The blood centre also asks about health, lifestyle and disease-risk factors before donation.
WHO notes that donor-selection criteria vary between countries and local blood services. This means an age or weight guideline found online should not be treated as automatic medical clearance.
Why screening matters
Before donation, the blood service checks information about your health and may perform a brief health examination. The purpose is to protect both the donor and the person who may receive the blood.
What if you are unsure?
Tell the blood centre about relevant health concerns, medicines, recent illness or other circumstances when you attend. The qualified staff at the blood centre can decide whether you can donate that day or should wait.
