What to Do Before Donating Blood
Preparation starts with being honest about your current health and following the instructions of the blood centre. Online checklists should not replace the centre's donor screening.
Medical information notice: This article provides general educational information and does not determine whether you are medically eligible to donate blood. Final donor eligibility is assessed by the blood centre or qualified medical staff.
Know that screening comes first
Donor eligibility is assessed at the blood centre. Before donation, you may be asked about your health history, medicines, lifestyle and recent circumstances. Answer these questions truthfully so the staff can make an appropriate donor-selection decision.
Do not donate when you are unwell
WHO advises that people who are feeling unwell or have certain infections should not donate at that time. Whether a particular illness or condition requires a temporary deferral is determined under the applicable donor-selection rules.
Tell the blood centre about relevant medicines and health concerns
Medicines and health conditions can affect donor eligibility. Bring accurate information and discuss anything you are unsure about with the blood-centre staff rather than making a decision based only on an online article.
Follow the centre's instructions
Different blood services may have specific instructions for donors. Follow the instructions provided by the centre you plan to visit, including any advice about food, fluids, identification or appointment arrangements.
