What Happens After Donating Blood?
After donation, the blood service gives you time to rest and recover before you leave. Your own blood centre's instructions should take priority if they differ.
Medical information notice: This article provides general educational information and does not determine whether you are medically eligible to donate blood. Final donor eligibility is assessed by the blood centre or qualified medical staff.
Rest before leaving
WHO describes a short rest period after donation, usually with refreshments. Take the time provided by the blood service rather than leaving immediately.
Keep up your fluids
WHO advises drinking plenty of fluids over the following 24 hours. Follow any additional instructions given by the blood centre.
Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day
WHO recommends avoiding strenuous activity for the rest of the day after donation. If the blood centre gives you different or more specific instructions, follow those instructions.
If you feel unwell
Tell the blood-centre staff if you feel unwell before leaving. For symptoms or concerns after you have left, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on an online article.
